Pennisetum glaucum 'Purple Majesty' was developed at the University of Nebraska. The purple pearl millet was discovered among stock for a breeding program intended to create sorghum and pearl millets for grain. While the purple pearl millet did not fit the needs of the intended program, its use was encouraged ornamentally. David Andrews and John Rajewski, the hybridizers, selected the most desirable purple millets and used them to create the hybrid we know as Pennisetum glaucum 'Purple Majesty'.

Pennisetum glaucum 'Purple Majesty' is an All-America Seed Selection winner.
